A Mendoza factory makes Olympic rifles
Fabricio Lavilla prepared race cars in his workshop in Dorrego. One day he discovered a Russian rifle and his life changed. He bought the necessary equipment and for three years he has manufactured compressed air rifles that are used in world-wide shooting competitions. Now their weapons are also used by shooters from Chile and Uruguay.
Its owner says it is the only factory of compressed air rifles for competitions in Latin America. It is located in a small street in Dorrego, so it goes unnoticed for most of the people who pass through there.
Fabricio Lavilla founded only three years ago LT Airguns and from that moment the growth of his enterprise has been unstoppable.
He says that one of the secrets is that his rifles are specially designed for the role they play and that sets them apart from other companies whose products need extra elements.
"I started as a hobby thanks to a friend who lent me a Russian rifle. I copied it and because of the good result we had after trying it we started with the factory, leaving behind the workshop where we prepared race cars, "says Fabricio in the middle of his work, surrounded by some automated machines and others that require precise Manufacturing work. There he works daily with his three employees: Ivan, Marcelo and Leonardo.
In the world Cup
The rifles "made in Dorrego" were in the Lisbon World Cup 2016 and for the next ecumenical meeting, which will be held this year in Wales, 18 competitors - out of 400 - will use the weapons made in Mendoza, which speaks of professionalism And the quality with which they are elaborated.
In the workshop two types of rifles are manufactured . Those that serve for the field-type competition , which have a value of 45 thousand pesos (GBP £1950 Sport forex) . It is a specialty that simulates a hunt, only that is shot to folding targets.
They also work with those who are for shooting and hunting , which are around 25 thousand pesos.
"We are making rifles for the whole country and also for the rest of the world. For example, the whole team from Uruguay uses them and some shooters from Chile as well. In addition, we came to visit Jack Harris, who is the world champion in the field target, and said that our rifles are very good, "says Fabricio, who also includes the Argentine national team.
As part of the national team, the owner of LT Airguns participated in the Lisbon World Cup and this year he will repeat the experience in Wales with 12 other Argentine shooters.
"I started shooting three years ago. Now I am all day with this, "he says satisfied with the achievements gained in such a short time. "The strange thing is that when we take our rifles to the local shops they do not believe that we make them here in Mendoza", adds.
3D parts
Still surprised by the success of his venture, Fabricio says that two years after starting to manufacture competitive weapons, his brand shines among the four or five most important in the world, which is unexpected.
In the Dorrego workshop, the machines work until the holidays because it says that it has a waiting list of 40 days for the quantity of orders that receives. Is that making a rifle demands 10 days of work. "We have many orders, but we are a small company," says Fabricio.
Walking through the workshop you can see an incomprehensible apparatus for an untrained eye, full of aluminum shavings. It is a Mechanized Numerical Control Center that works with 3D plans. After everything is computerized, pieces leave ready to join the rifles that are being assembled.
"We have a lathe to make some 3D parts and a CNC lathe, among other machines. The guns for the weapons of competition are brought from Germany (from the company Lothar Walter) and for the hunting, from Buenos Aires (Moggia), "details.
Finally, he says that in this undertaking is essential the commitment to the task they perform. "Competing with imported rifles has helped us a lot. We are already thinking about expanding."
Step by Step
To make one of these racing rifles, before delivery has to comply with six steps:
1- Design and development of the prototype.
2- Purchase of materials. Some in Buenos Aires, others in the United States and cannons in Germany.
3- Machining of parts.
4- Shipment to Buenos Aires for the anodizing of pieces (to give color to the aluminum).
5- Armed.
6- Individual test of each rifle.
